On 19th July 2005, exactly 3 years back President Bush called for giving India the same access to benefits of nuclear technology as other responsible nuclear states. He called India a “responsible state with advanced nuclear technology” and appreciated our strong commitment to preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, saying that “India should aquire the same benefits and advantages as other such states.
This had effectively cleared the way for the transfer of “Civilian Nuclear Reactors” to India to meet our acute energy needs, because at that time we were growing and were emerging as a very strong regional economic power. ( we do require power and we are already slipping back to developing country status from emerging strong economy, because our Left brothers wants us to remain poor, powerless, and as per Brinda Karat’s statement today, wants to impose heavy duties on business houses like Reliance, so that they either wind up their business. or shift to countries like USA or UK or some other Asian countries, like Mr. Mittal had done. (I remember Ayn Rand and her Atlas Shrugged, Every Indian must read this book to see the effect of bending to the pressure of communist parties.
On July 21st 2005, the Prime Minister Mr. Man Mohan Singh had said that Iran India oil pipe line via Pakistan is full of Risk.
However on the same day Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, our ex PM, had criticized the joint statement of President Bush and Man Mohan Singh, saying very clearly that opening up military and civilian nuclear installations for international inspection would have a long term implication on national security. He had said in a written statement issued by the BJP, that, “”The understanding arrived at between Dr Singh and President Bush regarding nuclear technology as reflected in the joint India-US statement of July 18, 2005, has already caused concern, even consternation among nuclear scientists and defense analysts. The Bhartiya Janata Party shares these concerns,” he said in a written statement issued by the party. The statement further stated as under, signed by Atalji himself.
“Though we believe in minimum credible deterrent, the size of the deterrent must be determined from time to time on the basis of our own threat perception. This is a judgment which cannot be surrendered to anyone else. By effecting a separation between civilian and military facilities, we have also accepted a crucial provision of a future fissile material cut-off treaty even before such an international treaty has been fully negotiated and put into force by other nuclear weapon states,” he added.
He termed India’s offer to sign additional protocol with the US government on the civilian nuclear facilities as one fraught with dangers.
“Indian nuclear scientists have been allowed all these years to freely carry out research activities without anyone breathing down their necks. Under the new arrangement, this will change and put restrictions even on our research programmes. Of special interest to us is the thorium research programme which would give us freedom from nuclear fuel imports and make us self-reliant in nuclear fuel. What happens to that programme? The government of India owes an explanation on this count,”
No, I personally do not agree with Vajpayeeji. but that will be in other article.
I will tell you exactly why the Left opposed the agreement in my next articles, BJP may agree tomorrow to this issue if Mr. Man Mohan Singh can address to the fears expressed by Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee and BJP.
I would only say right now that Mr. Man Mohan Singh will not be blamed by THE HISTORY even if the deal does not get through. because he has tried his level best and he has already told his boss and the Congress supreme authority, i.e. Ms. SoniaG. ( The BJP is accusing both of them of sharing the top most seat of power of the country ) about the deal. If Mrs. Indira Gandhi would have been alive today and if she wanted the deal to get through, she would have got it passed by Lok Sabha, by hook or by crook. Ms. SoniaG has yet to prove her mentle to the nation and show us that she is as good as Indiraji.. will she?
If Congress at this moment can not back Man Mohan Singh, then it will be a great misfortune of the Congress itself, and India at large.
In my next article I will tell you who supported this agreement and what they felt about this agreement three years back.
